the winding road

I remember this drive like it was yesterday. My great friend Wendy was driving. We both knew we were headed for a great day, but we had no idea where the road would lead us, for we had never been there before. It was the last day of our workshop in Sonoma, a weekend that changed both of our lives. I remember being so glad I didn't have to drive. I had my camera at the ready. This road we were on was so beautiful. One I had never ventured before. Every turn brought a new beauty, a new landscape.

And then I got sick. I had taken in so much, drunk it all in, and it left me feeling uneasy. Life is kinda like that sometimes. You can see the destination. You know you want it so badly. You know it will be great, that it is perfect for you. And along the way there are so many things to look at. So many things that are new, or strangely familiar, yet you don't know where to focus and it leaves you feeling out of sorts.
Sometimes on the road, you turn your head, because you drove by too fast, you feel like you missed something. Other times you just want to pull over and stay awhile, revel in the atmosphere, feel out your surroundings and stick your whole self into the environment, even if for just a minute.
But I am learning, or at least trying to remind myself, that no matter how beautiful the view, no matter how much you are pulled to look in all directions, it's best to keep your eyes straight ahead. Straight ahead on the road you know will take you where you want to go, where you want to be, where you're supposed to be.

There's a great line in an Ani DiFranco song that I just love. "When I look down I miss all the good stuff and when I look up, I just trip over things."
But, I do have to say that sometimes looking around brings us to new places or changes our perspective on where we're going for the better. Don't get too dragged down and forget that ALL of it is life and ALL of it makes us who we are. Winding road and straight paths alike.

I love your posts where you make me think. I wish I was as gifted with words as you...
We do need to have focus, but also take time to soak it all in. It's a balancing act. That's what life seems to be... a balancing act.

I think I have it figured out..YAY! I LOVED this post and the amazing pic. The winding road takes us to a few places we never planned on visiting but just remember to keep looking straight ahead and it will lead you where you want to go. Love you!!

I love you! I love the connection that weekend gave you and me. We knew each other before, but now I "know" you and your are so dear to me. I try so hard to stay focused on the road ahead. Hard.

Amazing. You're writing makes me feel good. Like someone gave me a really warm blanket and a hot cup of coffee on a rainy, cold day. I feel like you wrote that for me... for what I'm going through. Like you were in my head and knew exactly what I needed to hear... so thanks.

I gasped when I saw your photograph and I drank in the words. The both brought such a flood of emotion back to me. So happy we will share a pit stop on our paths later this year! xoxo

I love the analogy you made with your words and this captivating photo. You have a real gift Carrie...very poetic. Not sure that is as important how long it takes to get there as that you are heading in the right direction... and that you are~

LOVE this winding road shot!!!! So cool, Carrie. I think I can hear Sheryl Crow singing right now, "Everyday is a winding road... I get a little bit closer. Everyday is a faded sign. I get a little bit closer to feeling fine" LOL!
